What you're seeing
Sound familiar?
- It hums when you flip the switch but doesn't spin
- It runs, then trips the reset button on the bottom
- Water under the sink that shows up when the disposal runs
- It grinds slowly, drains poorly, or smells no matter what you put down it
What's actually going on
A hum means the motor has power but the grinding plate is jammed — a bone, a bottle cap, a spoon. Tripping the reset means the motor is overheating, usually from a jam or from a motor that's wearing out. A leak from the side connections is a gasket or a loose drain fitting; a leak from the bottom of the body means the internal seal has failed, and that unit is done. Most disposals last eight to fifteen years depending on use.
The visit
What we do — and it's usually one trip
We come out, look at the actual problem, and give you a flat-rate price on the spot. If you approve, we fix it right then — the truck carries the parts this job needs.
Cut the power and clear the jam by hand from below — never by reaching in from above
Check the motor, the reset, and the mounting ring for wear
Reseal or retighten side connections if that's the leak
If the body is leaking or the motor is failing, replace it with a properly sized unit and re-plumb the drain and dishwasher connection while we're there
When it's more than a small repair
We'll always tell you when a repair costs more than a replacement is worth. And if you'd rather not have a disposal at all, we'll happily remove it and plumb a standard drain — plenty of homeowners on septic or with a tired kitchen drain line are better off without one.
If something's not right after we leave, we come back and make it right — no charge, no argument. That's the Loon Promise.
Good to know
Garbage disposal questions, answered straight
Can I fix a jammed disposal myself?
Sometimes — with the power off, an Allen wrench in the socket underneath can free it. If it hums again as soon as you try, or trips the reset repeatedly, stop before you cook the motor and give us a call.
How do I know if the disposal or the drain is the problem?
If the sink drains fine with the disposal off but backs up when it runs, the disposal's discharge is blocked or the drain assembly is at fault. If the sink is slow either way, it's the drain line. We'll tell you which on the visit — and fix either one.
Should it match my dishwasher?
The dishwasher drains through the disposal, so a replacement has to be plumbed for it — including the knockout plug and a proper high loop so dirty water can't siphon back into the dishwasher. We do that as part of the install, every time.
