Local knowledge

We're local to St. Paul — actually local

We're a family plumbing company, and St. Paul is a city we work all the time — the Victorians and four-squares of Summit Hill and Cathedral Hill, the workers' bungalows of the East Side and the West Side, the 1920s stock in Mac-Groveland and Highland, and the mid-century ramblers out toward the edges.

Houses this old have plumbing stories: galvanized supply lines that have narrowed to a trickle, original clay sewer laterals under the boulevard oaks, cast-iron stacks, and — more than anywhere else in the metro — the lead service line question. We also know St. Paul's water: softened river water from the Vadnais chain of lakes, disinfected with chloramine.

What St. Paul throws at its plumbing

Softened river water — and chloramine

Saint Paul Regional Water Services draws Mississippi water at Fridley, routes it through the Vadnais chain of lakes, and softens it to about 5 grains per gallon. That's moderately hard — most St. Paul homes don't need a softener, and we'll tell you so. The utility disinfects with chloramine, which is persistent by design: it doesn't gas off in a pitcher, and it takes catalytic carbon, not a standard filter, to remove the taste. Sodium runs a little high for anyone on a restricted diet, and 2024 monitoring found trace PFAS below federal limits.

Lead service lines: about one in five

This is the plumbing fact that sets St. Paul apart. Roughly one in five known service lines in the system is still lead, concentrated in the pre-1950 neighborhoods that make up most of the city, and the utility is working through a multi-year replacement program. The water itself is fine; the pipe between the main and your basement may not be. Lead needs a certified lab test — not a strip, not our in-home kit — and we'll point you to the right one. What we fix on the house side: galvanized supply lines, failed original shutoffs, and the pre-1986 solder joints that leak before they ever leach.

Clay laterals under old oaks, and hillside basements

St. Paul's sewer laterals are largely original clay tile under some of the oldest boulevard trees in Minnesota. Roots at the joints are the reason a St. Paul basement drain backs up, and a camera inspection is the smartest money a buyer here can spend — the city's Truth in Sale of Housing evaluation doesn't scope the sewer. The river bluffs and hills add their own twist: water runs downhill toward a lot of basements, and drain tile and sump pumps in older homes were rarely designed for a finished lower level.

Good to know

St. Paul questions, answered straight

Do you offer same-day service in St. Paul?

Yes — same-day service is the standard in St. Paul, not the exception. Call and we'll give you an honest arrival window, not a four-hour guess that becomes eight.

Are you licensed to work in St. Paul?

Yes. We hold Minnesota Master Plumber license ${{SITE.license}}, we're insured, and when a job needs a permit we pull it through the City of St. Paul and meet the inspector ourselves. Permit costs are part of the flat-rate price you approve up front.

How do I know if my St. Paul house has a lead service line?

Saint Paul Regional Water Services publishes its inventory and runs a replacement program — look up your address on their site. About a fifth of the system's lines are still lead, mostly in pre-1950 neighborhoods. The only way to know what reaches your tap is a certified lab test; we'll point you to one.

How fast can you respond to a plumbing emergency in St. Paul?

Call us and we'll give you an honest arrival time. For a burst pipe, shut off the main water valve first (usually in the basement near the meter), then call. We offer same-day and emergency service.

Do I need a softener in St. Paul?

Usually not — SPRWS softens to about 5 grains. If you're fighting scale and spotting, it's more likely an old water heater or fixtures, and the free in-home test tells us in twenty minutes.

Does St. Paul's Truth in Sale of Housing report cover the sewer?

No. TISH checks safety items in the house; it doesn't put a camera in the sewer lateral. On a pre-1970 St. Paul home, a separate sewer scope during your inspection period is the single best money you'll spend.

Do you charge extra to come to St. Paul?

No. No travel surcharge, no service-call games — St. Paul is squarely inside our service area. You get a free estimate and a flat-rate price before any work starts, same as every city we serve.
